Akamai, the world’s largest content delivery network, announced that it is working with software distributors to manage the increased traffic congestion due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company has decided to throttle gaming downloads in particular and this may result in slower or delayed downloads for players in some markets.
However, this will only be done during peak hours in regions where demand is high.
“This approach will help ensure every internet user and consumer continues to have the high-quality experience they expect across all of their internet services, and that gamers will still get the download they want, though it may take longer than usual during peak usage times,” Akamai said in a statement. Likewise, the company assures users that the move will not compromise access to vital digital services that healthcare workers and first responders require.
