The University of Kentucky researchers are working on an antiviral mask to kill the coronavirus on contact to help protect people from the virus.

The project is being led by Alumni professor Dibakar Bhattacharyya, a chemical engineering professor and director at the University of Kentucky’s Center of Membrane Sciences.

In an interview, Bhattacharyya has said that the basic idea is that enzymes in the antiviral membrane mask would attach to the spikes on the novel coronavirus. The enzyme would separate those spikes, which would kill the virus.

A $150,000 grant from The National Science Foundation was awarded to Bhattacharyya’s team to create these masks, but a definite timeline of availability has not yet been announced.
